First Stop Kolkata

I am setting up this blog to document my trip to India on behalf of WaterMark -- the philanthropic arm of ITT. WaterMark works with a group called Water For People and provides water purification systems and hygiene education programs to alleviate some of the suffering of the world that is caused by contaminated water. Water For People had a very successful program in West Bengal and has been invited by the Indian government to see if the program can be replicated in another location.

The purpose of the trip is to interview Non-Governmental Organizations (such as UNICEF), Government Officials and Water Professionals and write what we learn in a structured report. Water For People will then use the reports from the various states as the basis for their decision about their next program.

I feel very fortunate to have been selected for the program. I wrote an essay about 2 years ago applying to be a volunteer. I think I mentioned in the essay that I had never seen any company I was working for engage in philanthropy. What a wonderful idea! It really inspired me and perhaps gives some hope that this world may someday become a much better place for all people.
